‘The Extra Mile’ is the dramatic story of this eminent surgeon’s experiences across 40 years venturing far beyond the call of duty to serve in theatres of war, confronting heavy odds to save lives. Gritty yet compelling, it is profoundly moving in the lengths he has gone to. In his dedication to serve humanity, driven by his abiding faith in God, ‘The Extra Mile’ is equally the story of the conflict that ripped this country apart for 30 years and the appalling misery it caused, seen first-hand through the eyes of a compassionate and caring Sri Lankan! – Sunday Times, Sri Lanka

THEDANATH PERERA –
It is a superb piece of work, Dr. Goonetilleke, being the versatile surgeon , is excelling not only in the field of medicine but in Post hospital care, social activities and sports. He was an outstanding sportsman in his college days at St. Joseph’s and the medical faculty. He performed a yeoman service to the army during the 30 year terrorist war and Post war years. He was a much loved Doctor in Polonnaruwa and held in the highest esteem. As a good family man, he is regarded as an amiable social colleague.
I gathered most of these facts from his book, which is a very readable piece of work, giving vivid descriptions of his surgical experiences.
I recommend my friends and colleagues, not to miss this outstanding work written in simple, easy to understand narrative.

Dr. Goonetilleke has compiled a vivid description of his work as a surgeon and his social life, particularly in Polonnaruwa. He, the versatile personality that he is, excelled not only in surgery but also in social relations and civic duties, according to his narrative. As you read through, you realize that he was a much loved doctor and was held in high esteem by the people of Polonnaruwa. There are numerous Armed services personnel who owe their lives to Dr. Goonetilleke for the yeoman service he rendered during the 30 year terrorist war.
It covers part of history, social interaction and his personal commitment to health care. The fluent narrative with easy to grasp flow makes this book, an excellent read for all levels of society. I enjoyed reading it from cover to cover.

Hello Friends, I feel blessed to have known Doctor and be able to play a small part in making this book… Doctor Gamini Goonetilleke, is one of the humble and down to earth person I have ever come across… He is simple, gentle and kind. His way of telling stories are very easy for anyone to follow and understand, though it has some medical terms.
Every story is accompanied with real photographs, which he has captured with his own camera, which is basically full of visual proofs, so that anyone reading it will be able to look at it and go to that time frame and be a part of that story. One of his main purpose of writing this book is to inspire and educate the younger generation, so that they will get confidence, courage and with guidance to take the right decisions at the right time…
We all will have Real life experiences which teaches us more things, but everyone is not able to express or write a book out of it…
In one word its ‘Astonishing’. I will encourage everyone to get this book so that you will know not only the medical aspect of it, but you will have a copy of the master piece which speaks about the real history of war-torn Sri Lanka!
